First Deadwood jail, ca. 1876. The city was wide open and needed a jail. Miners carried lots of gold. Gamblers, prostitutes, gunslingers, and thieves were out to get what they could. Martha "Calamity Jane" Cannary Burke at Wild Bill Hickok's grave, 1903. Bullwhacker, prostitute, and nurse to sick miners, this gambling, cussing woman was also brave, kind, and generous. She died shortly after posing for this picture and was buried at this spot.

The Bodega Saloon, Deadwood. Built in 1879, the Bodega offered Deadwood residents a chance to drink and gamble. The bar offered "female entertainment," but women had to stay in the balcony. They could not go into the bar. (Courtesy Deadwood Public Library, Centennial Collection)
